Subletinn Sips: Logan Square's Best Coffee

Subletinn Sips: Logan Square's Best Coffee

Author: Sasha Kramer

As the air becomes crisp in Chicago, it is time to start layering up and heading to the local coffee shops to find that perfect cup of joe to warm you up. Our community at Subletinn have been finding the quaintest, most fall worthy coffee shops in Logan Square.

When moving into a new place, it is important to have a place to escape, a haven to do homework, read a book, or spend time with friends. Here is a head start on some cafes and coffee shops that we have found to fuel your coffee addiction.

Cafe Umbria

This Italian coffee shop sits just a short walk away from the Francis and Armitage Communities. Possibly the best part is the dark chocolates on the top of each drink. If you need a coffee on the way to the  Western Station it should be your go-to. It’s in a big red brick building and hosts its own roastery. We are pretty huge fans of it at Subletinn, you will often see us grabbing an oat milk latte on our way to the office!

Cafe Mustache

They offer a full bar and a small menu that has the perfect gumbo, some sandwiches, and a few breakfast items. Big plus - they offer free refills on their drip coffee. They tend to play their own music, and you may become subject to conversations on the tragedies of capitalism and conspiring revolutions, but if that isn’t for you, just bring some headphones. At 6 pm they turn off the internet and the place transforms from your common socialist’s coffee shop to a music and comedy venue.

Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits

I don’t know if this spot is really a coffee shop, but the food is so delicious I had to include it. Bang Bang sits just around the corner from the Subletinn Francis House. “The food is amazing but don’t go for the coffee - their coffee is trash,” Yazan warns. It is a super cute spot with a huge outdoor garden seating. It boasts southern fare, complete with biscuits, piled with your choice of house-cured meat, sauces, and farm-fresh vegetables! Their cold brew is alright but I would stick to tea or water.  Disclaimer: This place gets super busy over the weekends, but the service is usually quick.

Katherine Anne Confections

This vintage tea shop is just off of California on Armitage and doubles as a delectable chocolate store. They have a thick “Chicago-style” hot chocolate, truffles, and a selection of sandwiches, which come with a  complimentary caramel. For me the hot chocolate is a bit too sweet, so I would opt for Mindy’s in Bucktown if you’re looking for the perfect Chicago hot chocolate. Why not try both?

Sip of Hope

A socially responsible spot that serves a great pot of coffee! Sip of Hope also gives 100 percent of its proceeds to support suicide prevention and mental health education. The coffee is good too because they brew Dark Matter Coffee. No food here; just a delectable cup of coffee.

Colectivo

Colectivo offers a wide array of coffee roasts, and the staff is super knowledgeable. As far as studying,  comfortability is fine but it’s usually packed so it can be close to impossible to actually work here. But, if you are wanting a memorable cup of coffee, this is definitely a good spot to check out.

New Wave

New Wave is a good place for studying any time of day. They’ve got metropolis coffee and a good selection of food. It’s got the widest selection of seating available on this list. So it is a great place to get away and feel secluded.
